Back when long journeys at sea were commonplace, many sailors suffered from scurvy and other malnutrition. To combat these problems, Vice Admiral Edward Vernon of England began mixing ingredients like limes and lemons with liquor to combat the scurvy. The liquor was watered down and sweetened to prevent drunkenness. This created a very early version of the Sour.

The sailors then brought this concept to America, which eventually became the whiskey sour.

Bartender James E. Pepper was said to have invented the Old Fashioned in Louisville at the Pendennis Club as early as 1881. He then brought his new recipe to the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel bar in New York City. This is supposedly where the Old Fashioned cocktail was born.

In 2015, the city of Louisville named the Old Fashioned as its official cocktail. Each year, during the first two weeks of June, Louisville celebrates "Old Fashioned Fortnight" which encompasses bourbon events, cocktail specials and National Bourbon Day which is always celebrated on June 14.
